Cut the VAT in Parliament
Since the European Council of Finance Ministers (ECOFIN) announced that it would allow EU Member States to permanently reduce VAT to 5% on the repair, maintenance and improvement (RM&I) of private dwellings in 2009, the power lies in the hands of the UK Government.
The Cut the VAT campaign has gathered support from politicians from different parties and different parts of the UK in order to help get the Government to listen.
Early Day Motion 669 - VAT on Repairs and Maintenance to Existing Buildings
More than 100 politicians from all three main political parties supported this Early Day Motion in the previous session of Parliament (2005 - 2010).
Plaid Cymru General Election Manifesto
The Plaid Cymru party adopted the Cut the VAT campaign message in their own manifesto for the 2010 general election. The manifesto stated 'we are committed to bringing empty properties back into use so that we make more housing available and renew our towns and communities. Plaid Cymru believes that there should be an immediate cut in VAT to 5% on all home maintenance, repairs and improvements.'
Early Day Motion 59 - VAT on Repairs and Maintenance to Existing Buildings
A new Early Day Motion was tabled at the start of the current session of Parliament (2010-2015). A number of MPs have put their name to the EDM including the main sponsors, Bob Russell MP, Peter Bottomley MP, Andrew George MP, Mike Hancock MP, Hywel Williams MP and Stephen Wiliams MP.
Welsh Assembly Statement of Opinion - Cut VAT
This Statement of Opinion supporting the campaign was raised by the Labour Welsh Assembly Member Joyce Watson in November 2010.
Westminster Hall Debate on the Construction Industry
Steve Rotheram, the Labour MP for Liverpool Walton led a debate in Parliament on the construction industry in June 2011. During the debate a number of backbench MPs, as well as the Shadow Construction Minister Ian Lucas MP, called on the Government to support growth in the industry and the wider economy by reducing the rate of VAT on home repair, maintenance and improvement work to 5%.
Scottish Parliament Motion - Cut VAT on Housing Improvements
In July 2011 the SNP MSP Kevin Stewart lodged a motion in Scottish Parliament calling on the UK Government to cut VAT on Housing Improvements 'to allow for the security and survival of Scotland’s small construction companies'. The motion is being supported by several MSPs, to which Kevin Stewart’s response was, "I am delighted that my motion has received cross party support and hope that the UK Government will take note."
